Watch Out For Internet Dating Scams

If you do any kind of chatting or socializing online, you should be aware of some of the internet dating scams out there. The victims of these scams usually end up losing money, but they also suffer emotional damage; they are often left with a broken heart or a bruised ego. These scams are sleazy and awful. It typically begins when a woman or a man starts communicating with someone they found or met on an internet dating site.

The scammer bides his or her time. They chat or send messages just long enough for the victim to grow attached to the scammer and trust him or her. But at some point, the scammer will start talking about how they've hit on hard times. This is the direction that most internet dating scams go. It could either be a line made up about how a family member needs help or how they will have to stop using the internet because they can't pay their bills. Having grown to trust and care for the scammer, the victim usually does whatever they can do to help.

Of course, that usually means forking over some money. Usually the victim wires the money over through Western Union or a similar service. The victim starts out believing they are helping out a friend. But after they send the money, they usually never hear back from their 'friend' again. An occasional victim might see a 'thank you' letter and perhaps a few other notes, but that's not usual.

It's a disgusting and pathetic form of deceit, but people engage in internet dating scams because it profits them. So watch out. If you're using an internet dating service, be alert and don't get taken in by 'friends' who need money or drop hints about needing help. The best thing is to simply never send money to anyone you haven't met.
